The state of Nagaland is bordered by Assam in the West, Myanmar (Burma) on the east, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam on the North and Manipur in the South. Visit to Longwa, the biggest village in Mon district is quite interesting as half of the place is in Myanmar. The most interesting visit is to the Chief's house, he stays with his 60 wives and is a major attraction in Longwa. Other attraction nearby Mon are Shangnyu Village known for wooden carving, Veda Peak, Chui Village and the harvest festival of Konyak Nagas called Along. Nearly 04 hours drive from Kohima is another destination called the Wokha. It is nature’s gift, dotted with colourful orchards, carpeted with flowers and fringed by hills and river, is a tourist paradise. Attractions are Doyang Hydro Project, Liphanyan Governor’s camp, Mount Tiyi, Doyang River, Water Pool, Totsu Cliff, Vankhosung and Tokhu Emong Festival in the month of November. Dzukou Valley at an altitude of nearly 2435 meters is situated nearly 30 kilometres from Kohima. A trek to Dzukou is a must for all adventure seekers. it takes two days to reach Dzukou Valley beginning from Viswema Village. It takes at least 2 days to reach here. The major attraction is Khonoma & Japfu Peak. Dzukou Valley in spring is all heaven with blossoming flowers and winter is also a nice time to visit. Places around Nagaland are many but in Nagaland the popular circuits are Dimapur - Kohima - Wokha - Mokochung - Tuensang - Mokochung - Zunheboto - Kohima and Mon - Tuensang - Kohima - Phek - Kiphire - Dimapur - Peren - Kohima. There are 16 main tribes in the state of Nagaland. They are Angami, Ao, Chakhesang, Chang, Dimasa Kachari, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Kuki, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sangtam, Sumi, Yimchunger, and Zeliang. The Angamis, Aos, Konyaks, Lothas, and Sumis are the largest Naga tribes and there are several smaller tribes as well. Major activities other than leisure tours are trekking, rock climbing and jungle camping. Nagaland is generally a hilly region with a pleasant climate throughout the year. Other than Hornbill festival there are several agriculture-based celebrations from sowing to harvesting like Mimkut (by the Kuki tribe), Bushu (by the Kachari tribe), Tsukhenye (by the Chakhesang tribe) and Yemshe (by the Pochury tribe). Sekrenyi (Angami tribe) and Miu (Khiamniungam) are two more festivals celebrated in the state. Interestingly Nagaland was the first state connected to the railway line in 1903 when the wide metre gauge railway track earlier laid by Assam Bengal Railway from Chittagong to Lumding was extended to Tinsukia on the Dibru - Sadiya line.
Airways - Dimapur Airport (DMU) is the only airport in Nagaland. Travellers can avail daily flights to Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi from Dimapur Airport. Dimapur Airport is the only airport in Nagaland and is located nearly 70 kilometres from Kohima. There are regular flights available for Kolkata and Guwahati from where tourists can board flights to other parts of the country. The nearest major airport is in Guwahati, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU). The nearest airports to Mokokchung are in Dimapur nearly 215 kilometres and Jorhat is nearly 105 kilometres and there are daily flights from Guwahati or Kolkata.
Railways - Nagaland is well-connected through the state's only railway station at Dimapur Railway Station (DMV). It is well-connected to Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi. There are direct trains from and to many metropolitan cities to Dimapur. Dimapur is the nearest railhead and is nearly 75 kilometres from Kohima and is 300 kilometres from Guwahati. Lakwa railway station en route to Sivasagar in Assam is one of the nearest railways stations to Mon.
Roadways - There are two National Highways that cross through Dimapur. NH 39 connects Kohima, Imphal and Dimapur to the rest of the country, NH 36 connects Assam (Nagaon) with Dimapur. Regular state transport buses play on a daily basis on these National Highways and tourists can avail to reach Kohima. Kohima is connected to all major places in the North East including Guwahati, Imphal, Shillong and Dimapur. Nagaland has over 15,000 kilometres of surfaced roads, but they get damaged by weather. Mokokchung to Kohima is nearly 170 kilometres. Mon to Jorhat is 157 kilometres, Dimapur is 300 kilometres and Guwahati is 480 kilometres.
