The place is situated on the gentle slope stretching from Kabi to Phodong with perhaps one of the best landscapes in the region. The Phensang Monastery, under the Nyingmapa Buddhist Order, was built in 1721 during the time of Jigmee Pawo. It was gutted by a fire in 1947 and rebuilt in 1948 through the efforts of the lamas. The annual festival of Chaam is performed on the 28 and 29 days of the tenth month of Lunar Calendar (Tibetan Calendar).
One of the most revered Monastery of Sikkim is situated in North Sikkim district in India. Tracing the history of the monastery, you will discover that it was built in the year 1721. It was built during the reign of Chogyal Tshudphud Namgyal. A year later, the dedication and perseverence of the lamas resulted in the monastery being rebuilt completely.In 1947 it was completely gutted by a devastating fire. However it was rebuilt in 1948. It is present in North Sikkim. It was built in 1721 by Jigme Pawo in the Northern part of Sikkim. The monastery was totally devastated by fire in 1947 and was rebuilt in 1948. Around 300 monks under the monastery celebrate their annual function in the month of December.

Kagyad dance is performed two days before the Sikkimese New Year which concludes with the destruction of evil and emergence of peace and prosperity. At an altitude of 1572 meters, Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim. Other Attractions nearby are Phodang & Labrang Monastery - The Phodong Monastery is counted amongst one of the six significant monasteries of Sikkim. It is located at a distance of 38 kilometers from from Gangtok on a spur of a hill. The construction of the monastery took place in the early eigthenth century after which it became the main centre for Kagyu lineage. However, with the emregence of Rumtek monastery, the significance of Phodong monastery lessened. Labrang Monastery is only 04 kilometers ahead of Phodong lies another monastery by the name of Labrang. The monastery is unique because of its architectural design. Between the Phodong and Labrang monasteries, a number of chortens remind of the Tumlong, the capital of Sikkim in the 19th century.
Bagdogra airport (IXB) in West Bengal is the nearest take off point for tourists. There are regular flights to and from Delhi, Guwahati, Patna, Bangalore, Kolkata, Bangkok & Paro. Daily helicopter services from Bagdogra is available for reaching Gangtok by air. Phensang Monastery is nearly 155 kilometers via NH 31 A from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP). Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) railhead is at a distance of 134 kilometers from Gangtok. Taxis and buses are available from the railway station to transfer you to your destination. Gangtok is linked to Kolkata by NH 31 A. Buses run between Gangtok and other destinations like Bagdogra, Siliguri and Kalimpong. Guest can hire taxis and private car.
