At present, there are nearly 825 large tea gardens and over 66,000 small tea growers in Assam producing nearly 20% of the total tea production in India. Tourism in Assam has contributed to a new and unique phase in the history of Assam Tea. Nagaland does not have too many but there are some in the areas bordering Assam in the Mon district bordering Sivasagar. Tea estates in Meghalaya is in East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts, i.e. not far from Shillong, Mawlyngot is one of them and one can combine it with visits to Shillong and Laitlum. Tripura has tea estates and some of them also have tourist lodges. The most famous one is the Durga Bari Tea Estate near Agartala which one can combine with visits to Agartala, Melaghar, as well as Unakoti.
